Alan Shearer cut an emotional figure on the Town Moor when addressing 150,000 fans as they chanted his name at the club’s official trophy parade. The legendary number 9 hopes that the Carabao Cup win can be the start of something special at St James’ Park when it comes to regular cup wins.
Shearer, along with his former strike partner Les Ferdinand, were special guests of United as they soaked up the celebrations. The icon was blown away by the end of the trophy drought – but had one wish when talking about his dad’s passing last year.
When talking about what a cup win would have meant to Alan senior, Shearer said: “Unfortunately, my dad passed away last May. He was lucky enough to be at the final in ’69. I just wish he could have hung on for one more year just to see and sample this.”
Now Shearer, who came so close to winning something during his stint as striker and captain, feels this can be the start of a run of trophies.
The ex-skipper continued: “I bloody hope so because we’ve waited long enough. When you look at what happened at Chelsea and Man City, and I know PSR rules are different, but we really hope this is the start. But I have to say if we are lucky enough to go on and win another trophy it will not be as good as this.”
Shearer joined the stars on the victory parade and also attended the team party at Wembley after the 2-1 win over Liverpool and he stated he was determined to make the most of it.
He said: “I said I was going to party heavier than anyone and I did! I don’t where I am, what time it is, what day it is…
“The last two weeks have just been the best in my life. It was some day at Wembley. It was bloody amazing. This is what I wanted. This is what we all wanted.
“I wanted this to happen in my lifetime and it has. Whatever happens in my lifetime I can go happy. Eddie Howe and the players have done this city so proud haven’t they?”
