Alan Shearer couldn’t hold back the tears after watching Newcastle United lift the Carabao Cup at Wembley.
A trophy is the one thing that evaded Alan Shearer during his time at St James’ Park. He may not have got his hands on one as a player, but he watched on from the stands at Wembley as Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1.
Shearer was pictured celebrating with Dan Burn after the match – the Newcastle defender was the local hero who broke the deadlock at Wembley.
Alexander Isak doubled the lead after the break but across the pitch Newcastle were excellent. Especially in midfield where captain Bruno Guimaraes ran the show.
An emotional Guimaraes revealed Shearer text him before the game, and it has now been revealed exactly what the Newcastle legend said.

After the heartbreak at Wembley two years ago, Eddie Howe changed Newcastle’s approach to the final – that included booking a hotel outside of London.
But on the day of the final, it was inevitable that there would be plenty of emotion around the match – Howe himself admitted that he was emotional throughout the day.
Bruno Guimaraes revealed that he had received a message from Shearer on match day, and The Athletic have now revealed what words were exchanged between the two Newcastle legends.
Shearer’s text read: “Bring that trophy back to the Toon please skipper,” and it was followed with black and white hearts.
Guimaraes delivered. He was excellent in midfield and lifted the trophy with Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier in front of thousands of emotional Geordies.

Guimaraes was already a fan favourite around Newcastle and was already on the brink of becoming an iconic club figure.
Now he is the captain who ended the 70-year trophy drought. A legendary achievement.
He burst into tears after the full-time whistle and admitted he one day wants to be chanted about like Shearer.

“People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it’s one of the best days. This is unbelievable,” Guimaraes said.
“This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer.
