BBC forced to apologise after incident was broadcast live on TV during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup celebrations

The BBC issued a 21-word apology after Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes got a little carried away during the club’s Carabao Cup celebrations.
Eddie Howe and his players were welcomed by an estimated 300,000 fans on Saturday afternoon as they celebrated ending their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy with a party like no other in Newcastle’s city centre.
An open top bus parade left St James’ Park at around 16:30pm before proceeding through Haymarket and onto the Great North Road. Eventually, they arrived at Town Moor, where Geordie duo Ant and Dec hosted an entertaining segment on stage.
Here, former Newcastle players Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer spoke to the crowd before the entire squad entered alongside the Carabao Cup trophy.
Dan Burn would soon open up about a week that featured an England call-up and his first international cap. “I never thought it would happen,” he said “To get that chance to play for your country in those two weeks was just incredible.”
But the biggest talking point from the event was Bruno Guimaraes, who started off proceedings by singing a song about teammate Sandro Tonali. “He eats spaghetti, he drinks Moretti and he hates f*****g Sunderland,” repeated the Brazilian.
Ant and Dec would soon hand the microphone back to Guimaraes with a word of warning. “You can have the microphone as long as you cut the swearing,” said Ant. “He doesn’t understand,” laughed Dec.
Guimaraes proceeded to sing “Campeones, Campeones, Ole Ole Ole” but the family friendly language was soon cut short when he was asked what he told his Newcastle teammates ahead of the game against Liverpool.
He replied: “Well, I said to them today we go to the pitch as a player and we leave as a f*****g legend.”
Moments later, the BBC news presenter was forced to make an apology. “Again, apologies for any bad language that you’re hearing,” he said live on BBC News. “The players and particularly captain Bruno obviously are very overwhelmed by all of this.”

Away from the bad language and Guimaraes produced a memorable speech to those in attendance.
“I think everyone here deserves it,” he began. “70 years is a lot for our fans. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, we want more, and we’re going to work for it.
“We did it for [the fans], we spent a lot of time together, so they deserve a lot more than anything, we played for them as well.
“The way I see it, kids, old guys, they’re crying, you know, I think we made history,. Now I have time to think about it and, yeah, history is made, but we want more.

“Since my first interview in the club, I said I want to put my name in the club’s history and that’s it. I did this but it’s just the first step. When you taste once, you just want more.
“For now, we just celebrate today and tomorrow I will have to start to think about our game in the Premier League.”
