Jamie Carragher under fire for Newcastle United hypocrisy over Anthony Gordon

Jamie Carragher has come under fire for slamming Trent Alexander-Arnold – months after sticking up for Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw by Everton earlier this season, a game best remembered for Gordon missing a first-half penalty. The 24-year-old left the Toffees to join Eddie Howe’s side less than two years earlier for £40million.
Animosity surrounding the exit saw Gordon mobbed by Everton fans and refuse to train as Newcastle negotiated a deal. Everton cheekily posted a swipe at the Toon ace following his penalty miss in October.
This provoked an angry response from Liverpool legend Carragher – a boyhood Toffee – who hit back at the Gordon criticism. He wrote: “Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch & who you then sold for £40million. The people’s club!”
Carragher is now facing the wrath of Everton fans after his latest comments over Alexander-Arnold. The biggest story in football, the homegrown Reds star is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Echoing the thoughts of most Liverpool fans, club legend Carragher insisted his “unconditional support” at Anfield has gone. He told Sky Sports: “Players are loved even more when they genuinely mean it when they say they do not want to play for anyone else.
“If that image of the home-grown talent living the dream is an illusion, people feel let down. By leaving Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold is making it harder for his own club to win its 21st league title and seventh European Cup.
“That is bound to stir emotions. With Monday’s statement, the unconditional support Alexander-Arnold enjoyed from the Kop when he was fully committed to Liverpool has gone.”
Anthony Gordon signed new Newcastle United contract
Gordon penned a new contract at Newcastle earlier this season following reported summer interest from, ironically, Liverpool. He set out to win silverware at St James’ Park – a feat he achieved in March.
“I just think the club’s in a great place,” Gordon said. “Since the takeover it’s just been up and up. Me and the gaffer are a perfect match in terms of style of play. I love it here.
“The team is very suited to me – and I’m here to win a trophy. The short story is we need to win a trophy. Winning a trophy here would be unbelievable because the fans have waited so long. To be part of that team who finally does it is a massive goal of mine.”

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has given a simple and yet emotional response following the Magpies Carabao Cup trophy parade. The Magpies received a heroes welcome as they toured the city centre on Saturday with hundreds of thousands of supporters lining the streets and the Town Moor.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were among those who cemented their legacy under the arch at Wembley in their 2-1 win over Liverpool, earlier this month.
With the FA Cup taking place this weekend, the Premier League is not due to return until midweek after Eddie Howe’s stars returned from international duty, it meant the Magpies had a free weekend as they returned to the North East for a historic occasion.

Although Gordon missed the showpiece in the capital due to suspension, after his red card against Brighton & Hove Albion, the England winger was one of the standout performers on route to the final
Gordon contributed with two goals and an assist during their Carabao Cup campaign, ending the 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. Taking to social media, Gordon posted on Instagram: “Very special day.”
Howe sent an emotional message to those who gathered in Newcastle city centre on Saturday as he vowed that the success was just the beginning for the Magpies.

“We wanted to try and bring success, happiness to everybody here, but the scenes today have just taken our breath away,” he said.
“A big thank you to everyone that’s come and supported us. The loyalty, passion, devotion that you show us, and we really appreciate it. Thank you.”

Shearer added: “I bloody hope so because we’ve waited long enough. When you look at what happened at Chelsea and Man City, and I know PSR rules are different, but we really hope this is the start.
“But I have to say if we are lucky enough to go on and win another trophy it will not be as good as this.”
