The German striker returned to action for the first time since mid-January as a hamstring injury saw him miss 10 games.
Fullkrug came on at half-time for Evan Ferguson as Graham Potter rolled the dice to desperately find an equaliser.
However, the former Borussia Dortmund striker missed a glorious chance to find an equaliser for his side.
Fullkrug return not gone as expected
West Ham were languishing in 16th place before their trip to Molineux and were separated by just eight points to WOlves in the table. The narrow defeat has now seen Vitor Pereira’s side cut short the eight-point gap to give points as Potter’s men walked away empty-handed.
Jorgen Strand Larsen opened the scoring for Wolves in the 21st minute, after which West Ham played catch-up.
With West Ham unable to penetrate the Wolves defence through Ferguson, Potter decided to bring on Fullkrug in the 46th minute.
The 32-year-old failed to get a single shot on target and lacked confidence in front of the goal. In the second half, Lucas Paqueta threaded a brilliant ball to Fullkrug, but instead of attacking the ball, he squared it to Jarrod Bowen.
Fullkrug’s poor game was not received well by pundit Clinton Morrison as he was unconvinced with the German.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (8:56pm, 1 April), he said: “It’s a great ball from Paqueta. West Ham are dominating and Fullkrug makes a great run into the box.
“Instead of getting his head up, all he can do is square it to Bowen. He’s got a tap and he tries a ridiculous shot.
“This ain’t the same player I saw playing for Germany and I know he’s just coming back from injury, but that’s not, I’m not making excuses for that. He just has to show a bit of composure, nowhere near good enough, still one-nil Wolves.”
Potter needs to start picking up points
The former Chelsea manager arrived at the London Stadium with the aim of guiding West Ham to a mid-table finish. However, since Potter’s arrival, the Hammers have lost five games and picked up just 11 points since his appointment in January.
The Soulihull-born needs to get his act together or they risk falling further down the table. While they remain 17 points clear of the drop zone, they are just five points above 17th-placed Wolves.
West Ham now face high-flying Bournemouth next followed by a trip to Anfield, mounting pressure on Potter. If the former Brighton manager is unable to turn the results around in his favour, he may not continue as the West Ham boss beyond the summer.
