Paul Merson predicts who will win in the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton

Liverpool return to Premier League action this week with a huge clash at Anfield against Merseyside rivals Everton.

The Reds remain 12 points clear of Arsenal in the standings with Arne Slot’s side having a real chance of wrapping up the Premier League title this month, with wins in their next five games needed to secure the biggest prize in English football.

Although March was a bad month for Liverpool after being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United, Wednesday’s clash against Everton will give the Reds the perfect chance to return to winning ways against their cross-city rivals.

And Paul Merson has now given his prediction ahead of the final Merseyside derby of the season.

Liverpool predicted to get the job done against Everton

Speaking to SportsKeeda, Merson predicted Liverpool to get the business done against Everton with a 2-0 win at Anfield this week, even with the Reds not looking at their best before the international break, as the pundit said: “I’ve got to go with Liverpool here.”

Merson added: “I expect Everton to make it hard for Liverpool, but I look at them and I don’t see an X-factor that can hurt the hosts at Anfield. Liverpool have not consistently blown teams away this season. They have just been efficient and consistently better than the others.

“I don’t want to make it sound like Liverpool are not a good team or that they don’t deserve to win the league. But they are not like the best Manchester City side that dominated the league under Guardiola. Liverpool were looking a bit leggy before the international break, so the rest came at the right time for them.

“The holy grail for Liverpool is winning the league and I expect them to do it. If you asked any Liverpool fan what trophy they wanted to win at the start of the season, they would’ve picked the Premier League.”

Liverpool need to assert their dominance in the Premier League again

With Arne Slot wanting Liverpool to play Everton as soon as the Carabao Cup final was over, it’s clear to see that the Reds have been itching for this fixture for some time, even with the international break coming at an optimal time.

And with just nine games left to go this season, Liverpool will want to again assert their dominance in the Premier League with a big result against Everton, who are there for the taking after winning just one of their last five matches.

Indeed, Liverpool will want to wrap the Premier League up as quickly as possible, and a win this week against Everton will be the perfect step in the right direction in trying to achieve this realistic goal.
