Cerny sprayed water in Celtic fans’ faces after celebrating Rangers’ 3-2 win over Celtic more than two weeks ago now.
The Rangers man was branded “petty and infantile” and still faces an SPFL ban for his actions even if Police Scotland’s probe ended without a caution.
Brendan Rodgers insisted the Czech crossed a line and showed “clear disrespect” in the aftermath of Hamza Igamane’s goal but now Gers assistant interim coach McCann has been flippant about the situation and, more prominently, Rodgers‘ thoughts.
Neil McCann refused to acknowledge Rodgers’ words
As his press conference ended, McCann was quickly asked about Rodgers’ comments on Cerny’s behaviour. The question put to him was: “Brendan Rodgers said he disrespected Celtic fans…”
Yet McCann abruptly walked off after replying: “Did he? I haven’t seen it.”
It was such a nonchalant and glib reply that Rangers did not include it in their official press conference footage. But you can view it via the Rangers Review’s full video as shared on their YouTube channel.
McCann didn’t even have the decency to echo Barry Ferguson’s words when he absolved Cerny, perhaps predictably, for merely getting too excited in celebrating his side’s win.
Rodgers wasn’t having it, anyway, as the Irishman insisted he would never like his own players to behave the way Cerny did at Celtic Park, Ibrox or anywhere else.
What Rodgers said about Cerny’s water incident at Celtic Park
He said: “I obviously heard what had happened and you can’t do that. That’s the reality.
“I understand the jubilation and Rangers players have every right to celebrate with their supporters. You come to Celtic Park, like it would be if we go to Ibrox, you win a game of that magnitude then you celebrate. But not in that way.
“It’s disrespect, isn’t it?
“It’s a lack of respect if a player runs up a touchline and he’s squirting a water bottle in a supporter’s face. I certainly wouldn’t want my players to do that.
“I think we all know there’s a line we shouldn’t cross.
“It’s an amazing fixture and an emotive game and I thought it was great to have the fans back in and that gave it an extra bit as well.
“But there’s lines and you can’t antagonise, especially in this fixture, because that can lead to an issue.”
