A brace from Brennan Johnson in the first half, along with a late penalty for substitute Mathys Tel condemned the Saints to a 3-1 defeat and relegation back to the Championship.
Over the course of the last ninety minutes, we examined each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at how they got on.
Tottenham’s player ratings vs Southampton
Guglielmo Vicario – Vicario was called into action a couple of times in the second-half, and he was up to each test. He did concede in the dying moments of the game, but there was little he could do about it. 7.
Djed Spence – The English full-back kept his energy from the start to the end. He definitely has a case for player of the match right after Johnson. Once more solid at the back and offering plenty in attack with an inch-perfect assist to show for it. 9.
Cristian Romero – Tottenham didn’t have loads of defending to do in the second half, which left Spurs defenders with little to do. Romero, in the first half though, was well and truly involved in attack, drawing fine saves from Ramsdale from set-pieces. 7.
Ben Davies – A quiet performance from the Welshman who had a decent performance. A clean sheet would have helped, but Tottenham conceded late on. 6.
Pedro Porro – It was a solid performance from the Spanish full-back who was handed a rest against Chelsea last Thursday. Today, though, he looked rather impressive, particularly in the second-half when he was allowed to go further up the field. A few shaky moments at the back, when the Saints tried to break from his position. Aside from that, he was solid. 7.
Lucas Bergvall – Yet another consistent display from Bergvall, who was taken off around the 79-minute mark, with Postecoglou having his eye set on Thursday. The Swede once more played the pivot role with confidence and class, ensuring that Spurs kept playing. 8.5.
Rodrigo Bentancur – This was one of Bentancur’s better performances so far this campaign. He was taken off rather early, not even getting to the 60th-minute mark. Early signs that he would be one of the first names on the teamsheet on Thursday evening. 7.
James Maddison – The second half was a lot quieter for Maddison, who certainly impressed in the first half, after his beautiful pass found Son, who played in Spence, who got the assist for the first goal. Maddison himself got the assist for the second, after his header found Johnson, who stayed onside to slide in past Ramsdale. 8.
Brennan Johnson – Johnson would have loved to get a hat trick today, but it was clear that Tottenham’s focus in the second half was to manage the game and not give Southampton any chances to get back into it. However, both his goals were well taken. 9.
Dominic Solanke – Not his day once more has his drought extends to nine games without a goal. He had more chances in the second 45, drawing a couple of fine saves from Ramsdale, however, he failed to find the back of the net. 7.
Heung-min Son – Ange Postecoglou clearly had his eyes on Thursday with Son’s early substitution in the 55th minute. Aside from his Djed Spence pre-assist and some lively wing play in the first half, it was a rather quiet outing for the Korean. 6.
Substitutes:
Pape Sarr: Came on for Bentancur, and did what was expected of him, making his presence felt in midfield. 5.
Wilson Odobert: Odobert came in from the bench in the 57th minute for Son, had a few bright moments but chances were few and far between. He did, play Johnson in before he won the penalty. 5.
Archie Gray: Many Spurs fans would have hoped for Gray to have started this game, but that was not the case this time. He did have a brief cameo off the bench, but barely affected the game. N/A
Yves Bissouma: Bissouma had a rather passive game as Tottenham were focused on seeing the game out. He came on for Maddison in the 80th minute. N/A
Mathys Tel: Tel replaced Dominic Solanke in the 87th minute and had little impact on the game. However, he did get a goal after converting a penalty in the dying moment, from a foul Johnson drew in the box. That marked Tel’s first Premier League goal for Tottenham. 6.
