Fabian Schar has signed a new one-year contract extension with Newcastle United, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026.

The 33-year-old centre-back had been in talks with the club for several months and has now officially agreed to extend his stay.

“I’m buzzing to extend my stay here,” Schar said. “It’s been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I’m really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.”

Schar joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 and has been one of the most-trusted players in the PIF era under Eddie Howe—the center-back leads all Newcastle players in Premier League appearances since Howe’s appointment in November 2021.

“It’s my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city,” Schar said. “So I’m really glad to be continuing that. Now it’s about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible.”

Howe praised the veteran defender’s leadership and impact.

“Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club,” Howe said. “As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group. He has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far.”

Even after this news, Newcastle are expected to recruit a right-sided centre-back this summer, with Schar viewed as a key figure for squad depth and leadership during what could be another European campaign.

The plan should be to reduce Schar minutes gradually in 2025–26, but his experience and ball-playing ability remain central to Howe’s system.
