Fabian Schar has issued a “lips are sealed” reply to Andy Carroll after Steve Bruce’s management at Newcastle United came under further scrutiny.
Last month, the former Toon boss became embroiled in a public spat with ex-striker Dwight Gayle. The duo endured a frosty relationship during Bruce’s two-and-a-half-year reign at St James’ Park.
Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, Gayle accused the 64-year-old of lacking tactical acumen on the training ground. He went on to take a pop at Bruce for his conduct following the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021.
“I felt that he didn’t spend enough time working on a lot of things with us,” Gayle said. “Perhaps he was trying to go game by game rather than developing us as a team. I think we could’ve improved a lot of things.

“I remember some of the boys got chucked into the Man City shift. We had a three-game week and the gaffer chucked some of the boys under the bus in terms of who had to play Man City away.

This provoked an angry response from Bruce, who discredited Gayle’s footballing ability while referencing a horror miss against Manchester City in 2020. Another public war of words could be about to ignite after ex-Toon striker Carroll – who Bruce signed in 2019 – hit out on social media.
Current defender Schar shared an innocuous post on social media after helping Newcastle defeat Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium. In the game, the Swiss ace hit the bar from inside his own half, which allowed Jacob Murphy to tap home.
Carroll cheekily commented “and Brucey benched you” – which received a “lips are sealed” response from Schar. Eddie Howe famously brought the 33-year-old back from the cold in his first game as manager.
Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles had been preferred to the more technically gifted Schar – who signed a one-year contract extension last week. But the centre-back has enjoyed a renaissance since Howe’s appointment three years ago.

Schar admitted he considered leaving the Magpies until finding a new lease of life under Howe. Moments like his memorable game – and goal – against Paris Saint-Germain almost never became a reality.
“(It’s been a) huge turnaround, I think,” he told the club’s matchday programme last season. “Not just for me, for everyone, when you see where we have been and where we are now. But for me personally, obviously, there were times when I didn’t want to not come in.
“I couldn’t see myself long-term here, to be honest, because I didn’t get any trust from the managers – or the things that happened here. But since a year, since the new owners, since the manager, everything completely changed.
“I’m so happy for myself that I’m in this position now, being in the team, playing games, and the team’s doing well. I appreciate it a lot.”
