IT’S a bucket list spot for many Celtic fans: the site where their team became the first from these shores to lift the European Cup.

But Hoops fans visiting the Estadio Nacional, the cherished site of that 1967 win, have landed a reprimand from stadium chiefs for what they call “inappropriate behaviour on the part of some visitors”.

Bosses at the Jamor complex, which is set to undergo a modernisation costing a whopping €25MILLION, have complained of Hoops fans “disregarding the established rules” and “damaging infrastructure”.

They say it compromises the experience of all users and limits the ability to allow fans to visit the interior of the stadium.

Bosses have even implemented new rules, saying that fans will now only be allowed to go inside the stadium in groups, and for no longer than 20 minutes.

A notice on the Jamor website entitled Celtic’s Visits to the National Stadium reads: “Dear Visitors,

“It is always a privilege to welcome you to the National Stadium and share this iconic and special space with you.

“We have tried to ensure that visits are in line with the various activities taking place there, minimising restricted access periods as much as possible.

“However, we have recorded inappropriate behaviour on the part of some visitors, such as disregarding the established rules and damaging infrastructure.

“This behaviour compromises the experience of all users and limits our ability to visit the inside of the stadium.

“To ensure the safety and quality of these visits, we inform you that visits to the interior of the National Stadium will be permitted exclusively in groups, with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.

“Visits can take place from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and will be subject to space availability.

“We ask for your understanding, respect for the rules and cooperation with our team, in order to ensure that the National Stadium can continue to be a welcoming and accessible space for everyone.

“We thank you in advance for your support.”

Led by Jock Stein and legendary skipper Billy McNeill, the Lisbon Lions triumphed over Italian giants Inter Milan in the Portuguese capital to become the first side from the British isles to win the biggest prize in club football.

Goals from the great Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers saw the Hoops come from behind to win 2-1.

The stadium where the match took place is a listed heritage site which was originally built six miles west of the city between 1939 and 1944 to designs by Portuguese architect Jacobetty Rosa.

It still plays host to the Portuguese cup final – as well as rugby games.

But refurbishment has been on the way since at least 2012 and while there is no start date for the work as yet, it’s closer than ever with AFL Architects winning the job for their designs.

AFL are working with Lisbon-based Aires Mateus and Gonçalves Vieira Cruz after they won a competition with their designs – with the Portuguese Football Federation the client.
