Newcastle United target Matheus Cunha has hit back at upset Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters after allegedly posting and deleting an Instagram post.
The 25-year-old forward has been at the Midlands club since his 2023 move from Atletico Madrid. In that time, he has scored 31 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions and his performances have caught the attention of clubs across the Premier League.
Despite being under contract at Wolves until 2029, Cunha is expected to leave the club in the upcoming transfer window and is understood to have a release clause in the region of £62.5m. Newcastle are among the clubs linked with the attacker, with a recent report from the Daily Mail claiming Cunha will be the Magpies’ top target this summer should they qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Cunha has addressed his future on numerous occasions, admitting to The Guardian at the end of last month that he had offers in January but could not leave the club while Wolves were in the midst of a relegation battle. He said: “Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
On Saturday, an Instagram account by the name Talking Wolves shared a post alleging that Cunha had posted and then deleted a story on the platform saying: “Time to be happy. I will follow my dreams, not yours… So stay cool.”
The second comment added: “Do you know what you want? For people to not like me here? Unfortunately I’m going to the field to solve the problem of your favourite club.
“I’m not here looking for alternatives to be someone important. Fans root for their own, they don’t create misfortunes all the time.”
Cunha has just served a touchline ban after he was sent off for violent conduct during Wolves’ FA Cup clash with Bournemouth at the beginning of last month. The initial red card resulted in a three-game ban, but the FA charged him retrospectively and extended the suspension.
He missed their last four Premier League games against Everton, Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich Town. He will be available for selection again this weekend as they host Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux on Sunday.
