Eddie Howe is understood to be on the mend after being admitted to hospital on Friday night – but Newcastle United club chiefs say the head coach’s wellbeing is of paramount importance as he starts his recovery.
Howe has been in the care of medics over the weekend and will not be in the dugout for the clash against Manchester United. He remains doubtful to take training next week with Crystal Palace arriving at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
A Press conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning with Jason Tindall on standby to take media duties before the midweek fixture.
But Newcastle top brass feel that they are in safe hands with Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purchess and Simon Weatherstone all ensuring that top standards are adhered to while Howe is recovering. Tindall admitted that he’d been in constant contact with Howe in the build-up to the clash against the Red Devils.
A Newcastle statement on Saturday night read: “He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
“Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.
“Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club‘s first team staff.”
Tindall, speaking during his Press conference, had suggested Howe was in good spirits when saying: “He’s probably got a live feed there now, his attention to detail – he’s top, and that’s why he’s one of the best managers that’s out there.”
Howe’s admission to hospital is thought to be precautionary after club medics spotted concerns for their head coach. He will undergo further tests before getting the green light to return to Premier League duty.
It means Tindall could well remain in charge for the Palace game and will certainly oversee the majority of the preparation for the encounter against the Eagles. Given that the preparations for Wednesday – with meticulous standards driven by Howe – will start immediately after the game has finished against Man United, Howe will have full confidence in his backroom team to continue the great work that have led them to their most successful season since 1969.
