Newcastle United star wishes Eddie Howe had played him more this season, ‘tough year…’

Eddie Howe has a lot of players to keep happy at Newcastle United.
While the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are guaranteed starters at St James’ Park, there are others who perhaps do not play as regularly as they wish.

The likes of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock are no longer permanent fixtures in the Newcastle United starting XI, while Harvey Barnes has had to wait a long time for the opportunity he is getting now.
As for Kieran Trippier, he was once the Magpies’ undisputed first choice at right-back. However, he has spent the majority of the 2024/25 campaign playing second fiddle to Tino Livramento – the player who was brought to St James’ Park to eventually replace Trippier.

Kieran Trippier addresses his season for Newcastle United so far
While Trippier is in the starting XI right now due to Lewis Hall’s injury, it has proven to be a difficult campaign for the 34-year-old.
That is according to the man himself, who has told Sky Sports that he was hoping to play more regularly for the Magpies this season.
“It’s been a tough year,” he said.
“I’ve not played as many games as I would have liked, but that is full credit to Tino obviously.
“It says EVERYTHING about the supporters!”

“You’ve got to be professional, and I’ve been professional. I’ve worked hard in training, and you never know what could happen.
“I had an opportunity in the final. Every opportunity I get I try to grab it with both hands.”
Newcastle United already have their next Kieran Trippier
So far this season, Livramento has started 24 out of 29 Premier League games. As for Trippier, he has started nine Premier League games.
There really has been a changing of the guard at right-back, even if the younger player has ended up thriving on the left during Hall’s absence.
But this was always going to happen. When Newcastle bought Livramento for £32million, they knew he would go on to take Trippier’s place in the starting XI.
It has perhaps happened sooner than anticipated, while Trippier has still performed admirably when called upon. Trippier has been particularly brilliant in recent weeks, with the £12million man playing a key role in the Magpies winning the Carabao Cup and ending their trophy drought.
It is unclear what the future holds for Trippier, as he has been linked with moves away from St James’ Park in each of the previous three transfer windows.
There will soon come a time when he must be replaced completely, and Newcastle United will hope they are already prepared for that moment.
18-year-old defender Leo Shahar has spent a lot of time training with the first-team this season, while he was named on the bench for the first time for Newcastle’s win over Brentford. The club have extremely high hopes for Shahar, who has similar traits to Trippier.
In a perfect world, Newcastle will be able to replace Trippier with Shahar when the time comes, but it remains to be seen if that time will be the upcoming summer transfer window.
