Sandro Tonali’s volley from Alexander Isak’s flicked pass handed the Magpies the lead in the 24th minute. Alejandro Garnacho equalised against the run of play but the hosts put the Reds Devils to the sword in the second half.
A Harvey Barnes double and a strike from Bruno Guimaraes recorded a fourth straight Premier League win for Newcastle, moving them to fourth in the table ahead of their game in hand against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Delivering his verdict on the result, Shearer told the Premier League: “Only one team was going to win that in the second half, with the intensity with which they came out and hit Man Utd, wouldn’t allow them to play out from the back. Newcastle were far superior, and I expected that.

A professional on TV but a Newcastle fan on social media! Shearer would have heard chants from the travelling Man United fans, calling him a sad Geordie something.
But it was the Magpies club legend who had the last laugh. “Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd,” he wrote on X. The GIF, which was of a young child laughing, spoke a thousand words.
Shearer famously turned down a move to the Red Devils in favour of joining Newcastle in 1996. Although he didn’t lift a trophy with his boyhood club, the Premier League all-time’s record goalscorer doesn’t regret a thing.
“I am more than happy with my decision,” Shearer said on the Rest is Football podcast last year. “If I had the same decision to make again, I would do exactly the same thing. I loved my 10 years at Newcastle, despite us not winning anything. I wouldn’t change anything.”
