Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has rebuffed an approach from Tottenham as they seek a replacement for Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has seemingly been on the verge of losing his job for weeks now, and Thursday night’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt may well be his final match in charge.

With Tottenham starring down the barrel of a bottom-half Premier League finish this season, a win against the German side is crucial to any hopes Spurs may have of competing in Europe next season.

Whilst it seems a near-certainty Postecoglou will leave this season, his potential replacement is still up in the air.

Oliver Glasner has joined front-runners Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola as the favourites to take over; however, when speaking on the Transfers Podcast, journalist Duncan Castles reported the Spaniard is now unlikely to switch the South Coast for North London.

Andoni Iraola refuses to even speak with Tottenham

Speaking with host Ronan Murphy about Tottenham’s attempts to coax Iraola from Bournemouth, the journalist revealed the Spanish manager had been unwilling to even talk with Spurs, saying (17 April, 22.00mins): “Interestingly, my guidance on this is that Tottenham’s approaches to Iraola have been rebuffed by the manager.

“He has been invited, I’m told, to speak to them about that position and has actually declined to do so.

“Instead, he has been having conversations with Bournemouth, informal conversations with Bournemouth, for several weeks now about not only continuing on his current contract, but signing a new contract to extend there.”

After speaking about how liked Iraola is at the Vitality, Castles continued: “It looks as though he will be extending that stay at Bournemouth in the coming weeks, whether there will be a defined release clause written into his contract, whether Iraola will look to give himself a relatively easy way out, we will have to see when the formal negotiations begin.

“Bad news for Tottenham, if my guidance is correct, that they are failing to even get a conversation going with one of the obvious candidates.”

Football Insider Verdict

News of Iraola’s rejection will be incredibly concerning for Tottenham fans.

The Spaniard is one of the hottest names in world football right now, and his decision to turn down the mess that is Tottenham comes as no surprise.

His playing squad goes toe-to-toe with Spurs’ right now, and even if Bayern Munich target Dean Huijsen and Liverpool target Milos Kerkez leave this summer, Bournemouth’s recruitment department have shown themselves more than capable.

The major concern will be that alternatives, Glasner and Silva, may be similarly difficult to coax from their current clubs.

Crystal Palace‘s boss is enjoying a stunning second-half of the season, following a slow start, with his side competing in the FA Cup semi-final.
2024/25 Premier League stats    League rank    Tottenham
Goals per match    3rd    1.9
Goals conceded per match    14th    1.5
Average possession    4th    56.8%
Expected goals    6th    53.1 xG
Clean sheets    12th    6

The Eagles do not have the resources to offer their boss what Spurs can, but they remain a stable club with high upside, due to the talent in their squad.

Silva, meanwhile, has finally found a home after years of bouncing from job-to-job, and remains revered at Craven Cottage.

Should Tottenham miss out on both, there is a very real possibility that a large chunk of this summer is wasted trying to find Postecoglou’s replacement, further setting Spurs back in their quest to regain their place near the peak o

f the Premier League.
