Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira says his club have offered Nelson Semedo a new contract, with the chances of Leeds United landing the soon-to-be free agent looking increasingly slim.
Rumours had connected the Whites with the Portugal defender, though this always seemed speculative with Jayden Bogle expected to be the starting right-back at Leeds next season.
Semedo revealed last week that former club Benfica had shown interest in him, having previously admitted in March that the Portuguese giants will “always be my club”. Leeds Live understands United are not close to tying up any new signing just yet and right-back is unlikely to be a primary area of concern.
And to further narrow the likelihood of an Elland Road transfer, Wolves boss Pereira has outlined his intention to keep hold of his captain. “Nelson knows that we want him. He is our captain, a player who has helped me a lot to unite the group, on the pitch and off the pitch,” Pereira told A Bola.
“He is a quality player. I think the club has already made him an offer. We will see what happens. I never worry about losing him.
“I worry about getting players, because if someone with quality leaves, someone with quality has to come in. I hope that Nelson stays, but if he leaves, we have to get someone with quality.”
There could be scope for Leeds to bring in a back-up right-back should Sam Byram or Isaac Schmidt leave. Byram is currently in talks with the club over a new contract while Schmidt has left the door open for a potential summer exit given his limited game time this season.
Just two of his 14 outings were starts, none of which were in the Championship. Meanwhile, Byram has told Leeds that he would like to stay at his boyhood club.
