Newcastle United could yet be faced with a big decision to make on Kieran Trippier later this summer.

The former England full-back will be 35 in September and chances to cash in on the defender are running out. Trippier has a contract until at least summer 2026 as things stand.

Chronicle Live understands that Trippier is on a list of full-backs put to AC Milan ahead of the transfer window as the Serie A side look to add numbers defensively while there is long-term interest from a clutch of Saudi Pro League sides. Milan opted against signing Kyle Walker on a permanent deal for the 2025/26 season but could the Italian outfit or another club offer Trippier a big pay day?

Head coach Eddie Howe has fought to keep Trippier in the last three windows after interest from both Bayern Munich and Saudi Pro League sides. Only last winter, Newcastle resisted offers from Galatasaray in a decision that proved to be crucial given the experienced defender played his part in winning the Carabao Cup and getting into the top five.

Trippier made just 14 Premier League starts last season but was deemed an important figure as Newcastle scraped over the line to qualify for the Champions League. Nevertheless, Trippier’s wages come with a £5million per year price tag.

His experience and value in the dressing room is not in dispute, but Newcastle must consider cash bids for all fringe players this summer knowing that they must act accordingly because of PSR rules. With Tino Livramento deemed the first choice right-back when everybody is fit and Lewis Hall set to return from a foot injury, any bid for Trippier could be looked at.

Howe said last season: “No part of us wanted to lose Kieran (in January).

“He is unique, there is no-one can do what he can do – set-play delivery, passing ability and his overall leadership in unique.

“The old school leadership where you’re talking and communicating with everybody, thinking about the whole team rather than just yourself, it is almost a bit of a dying art now.”

Howe’s view on Trippier is likely to be unchanged but with a new sporting director set to replace Paul Mitchell, he could face another challenge to retain the full-back’s services. For now, Trippier will be expected to report for pre-season training in early July.
