ANOTHER European campaign has come to an end for Rangers and Celtic.

And while the Ibrox side earned kudos from another run to the latter stages of the Europa League, it’s Celtic who are quids in after their run in the new money-spinning format of the Champions League.

This was Celtic’s best European campaign for years, as they finished 21st out 24 qualified teams in the new league phase then went down narrowly to Bayern Munich in the playoff round.

Ignoring factors such as prize money for the glamour clashes, figures compiled by Football.Coefficient.eu show that Brendan Rodgers‘ men banked £28m in Uefa prize money.

That’s a major contrast to Rangers, who exit the Europa League with £11.7m in prize money to show for their efforts.

Facing a difficult set of games, the Gers finished a creditable eighth in the Europa League and made it past Fenerbahce to book a quarter final spot.

But Athletic Bilbao were too hot to handle, even if the controversial non-award of a penalty for a tug on Cyriel Dessers sparked fury.

In terms of the live coefficient rankings, Rangers are forecast to drop four spots to 30th but that’s still way ahead of Celtic, who have CLIMBED five spots but are still back in 54th on the continent.

Assuming Celtic go on to win the title with Rangers in second, both halves of the Old Firm will have to pre-qualify if they are to find their way back into the Champions League next season.

The Hoops go straight in at the playoff round on the Champions Path, while Rangers enter at the second qualifying round of the League Path.

Hearts banked £4m from their run in the Conference League, while Kilmarnok made £1m and St Mirren made £770k.

Barry Ferguson, meanwhile, says he plans to go back to an ambassadorial role if the Ibrox board don’t want him to take over sa permanent boss.

He said: “I’ll go back and do what I was doing before and get right behind them, making sure that we get the club back to winning trophies on a regular basis.

“I’ll go back to my ambassador, hopefully, If that offer’s still there.

“I got an opportunity that not many people get. I would have been crazy to knock it back.

“I had a lot of doubters, but I’ve got no issue with that. Everybody’s entitled to that opinion.

“But I know I can do the job.

“I know I’ve got the right people behind me, and all I was focussed on was making sure the three months were as enjoyable as possible.

“Now we’ve had a few bumps down the road, which is tough, but that happens at a club like Rangers.

“But my main objective and everybody who’s connected with Rangers is, to make sure we get the club back to a strong position and challenging every single season, because this season has been well off the standards that’s required.”
