Alan Shearer had previously said on The Rest Is Football that following the Carabao Cup win, he didn’t care about the remaining games of the season, something that Gary Lineker took great delight in pointing out this week as being very untrue.
While Shearer laughed off the accusation pointing out that he’s still laughing and smiling and that he’s more relaxed after a defeat these days, his tone soon shifted when discussing the game.
As we’ve said, Aston Villa beat us at our own game on Saturday and we can have few complaints about the scoreline. They could have several complains as it should have been more, but we’ll take what we got, thanks.

Alan Shearer echoed our sentiments by saying Aston Villa had more energy and simply wanted it more.
“Villa were brilliant. Villa did to Newcastle what Newcastle have done to a few teams over the past couple of months. They just overpowered them. They had more energy.
“Villa had far more energy, they won every challenge. They were better in every position, really, and Villa battered Newcastle. Actually, it should have been a few more. They were absolutely outstanding, Villa were.”

Shearer then went on to mention the dilemma facing Jason Tindall with team selection that we also pointed out, in that if he changed the starting XI and we’d got beat, people would have kicked off, and the fact that he didn’t change it and we got beat is still a reason people kicked off. Bruno Guimaraes apologised to Newcastle fans on social media following the loss, with the captain promising that he and his teammates will fight to finish as high up the table as possible in the final few games of the campaign.

Their league position still makes Newcastle one of the favourites to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season, but they must still be wary of those around them.
Newcastle’s run-in is slightly less favourable, with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea still to play them. However, Shearer has pointed out that Newcastle’s next game is against Ipswich Town, who have struggled in the Premier League all season.
Alexander Isak scored a hat-trick against Ipswich at Portman Road in December. Fans will be hoping that a similar outcome will happen at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United get case of deja vu after Aston Villa loss

Like the Villa game, Newcastle were on a good winning streak before playing Bournemouth. Then, they bounced back with a win against a relegation-threatened side the week after.
Newcastle beat Southampton 3-1 that weekend, fans will be hoping for a similar result against Ipswich.
