Aston Villa were beaten 2-1 away at Manchester City on Tuesday night. They looked on their way to a point at the Etihad Stadium after Marcus Rashford levelled up the score in the first-half. However, they conceded a late goal by former Wolves man Matheus Nunez to lose the game.
Unai Emery’s side now face a battle to get into the top four and are running out of games. They have recently been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG. However, they remain in the FA Cup and will play Crystal Palace in the semi-final at Wembley this weekend.
Aston Villa target Wolves ace Matheus Cunha
Aston Villa have held ‘talks’ about signing Wolves ace Matheus Cunha this summer, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol on X. Emery’s men are one of five Premier League sides to be interested in landing the Brazilian in the next transfer window. Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to be keen, whilst teams in Saudi Arabia are also believed to be admirers.
Cunha, 25, has a release clause of £64million. He has been on the books at Molineux since 2023 and has been a key player for his current club. They will face a real test to keep hold of him later this year amid attention from elsewhere.
The former FC Sion, RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin and Atletico Madrid man joined Wolves a couple of years ago on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent. He hasn’t looked back since and has become one of their most prized assets. The attacker has scored 32 goals in 87 outings, 16 of which have come in this campaign and his long-term future is up in the air at the moment.
Aston Villa target Matheus Cunha’s current situation at Wolves
Aston Villa could see Cunha as someone to boost their attacking department. They would need to fork out big money to lure him to Villa Park. Manchester United and Arsenal are also being linked which means there is strong competition for his signature.
Cunha was handed a new deal by Wolves back in February. Their chairman Jeff Shi said at the time: “Matheus has been on an amazing journey with us over the past two years and it’s been a privilege to see him grow into a big part of the Wolves family.
“Matheus has a good relationship with everyone at Compton Park, his personality is infectious to those around him, and we hope this new contract will provide a boost to the group. We can all see his quality on the pitch, but off it he’s developed into a leader of the group, and we’re delighted that he’s signed a new contract. It’s always important to us that we reward our strongest and most impactful players, and Matheus deserves this new deal.”
Meanwhile, Sporting director Matt Hobbs added: “The new contract is a reward for what Matheus has done, and symbolises his importance to us on the pitch. It is something that he’s earned because of everything he’s given us and will continue to give us.”
