Kris Boyd honorably agreed with paul merson on the faith of Rangers premiership title race this season
In the world of football punditry, few opinions carry as much weight in Scottish circles as that of former Rangers striker Kris Boyd. And when he agrees with an English football veteran like Paul Merson, it’s worth listening. Both pundits have recently voiced a shared and sobering assessment of Rangers’ current Premiership title hopes and the consensus is clear: it’s all but over for the Ibrox side this season.
Speaking during a segment on Sky Sports, Merson offered his perspective on the Scottish Premiership race, pointing to Rangers’ inconsistency and Celtic’s dominance as defining factors in the likely outcome.
When you look at the table and the way Celtic are playing, it’s hard to see Rangers closing the gap,” said Merson. “They’ve dropped crucial points and their performance in big games hasn’t been good enough. The Old Firm clash is the last real chance and even that may be too late.”
Kris Boyd, who remains closely tied to Rangers through his punditry and history at the club, didn’t disagree. In fact, he stood firmly with Merson, admitting that the title looks firmly out of reach.
“I love this club, and I’d love nothing more than to see them lift the title but we have to be honest,” Boyd said. “The gap is too big, and there’s been a lack of consistency that makes it nearly impossible.”
As it stands, Rangers trail Celtic by 15 points with just five matches remaining. Though mathematically not eliminated, the mountain to climb is steep and made even more daunting by the psychological edge Celtic has maintained all season. The most recent League Cup final loss to Celtic on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw further deepened the wounds and exposed some of the cracks in barry Ferguson squad.
Boyd and Merson both pointed to key games where Rangers failed to rise to the occasion
You can’t win titles if you don’t win your must-win games,” said Boyd. “We saw them lose to lower opposition in the Scottish Cup. We saw them struggle in Europe and now, in the league, they’ve simply not done enough.”
Merson added: “It’s not just about skill; it’s about mentality. Celtic have looked like champions. Rangers haven’t.”
However, both pundits stopped short of being entirely negative. Boyd, in particular, highlighted the progress made since Ferguson took over and insisted that a strong finish to the season could set the foundation for a serious title charge next year. “Ferguson has shown he’s got the ability to build something here. They’ll need to regroup, invest wisely in the summer, and come back stronger.”
