“They’re all stupid” – Van der Vaart explains why he didn’t find it hard at Tottenham

Rafael van der Vaart believes he didn’t find it hard at Tottenham in the Premier League, because many in English football are stupid.

FC Update cover comments from the former midfielder today made on Ziggo Sport’s Rondo programme, in which they were talking about Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal.

Van der Vaart isn’t impressed with Mikel Arteta’s side, believing them to be performing above their ability as they face PSG in the Champions League semi-finals.

This opinion was questioned, with a fellow panellist pointing out that if you compare the Eredivisie to the Premier League, it is clear that there is a major difference between the two leagues.

Van der Vaart wasn’t interested in that debate, though, insisting that as far as he’s concerned the Premier League isn’t as hard as suggested.

He, of course, had two very good years at Tottenham, scoring 28 goals and registering 18 assists in 77 games for the club before managing just two appearances in the 2012/13 season.

And he thinks he was able to manage those numbers because, many in the Premier League are stupid.

“It’s not that bad,” he said.

“I loved playing there, they’re all so stupid there. Never cover, you get all the space. Only: because the audience is so close to the field, and you really experience that in your living room, it seems super-fast.

“But it’s not that bad, in terms of football, it’s really not that bad.”
