Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes has hit serious turbulence just months after his £10million January switch from Celtic, with the Japanese striker struggling for game time and goals in Ligue 1.
The former Celtic talisman has featured only six times for Rennes and is yet to find the net. His most recent appearance came in a 5-1 away win against Le Havre on April 13, where he made a late cameo from the bench in the 83rd minute. Since then, he has been excluded from the squad entirely for Rennes’ last two matches — a 2-1 win at home to Nantes and a humbling 4-1 defeat away to Lyon.
Reports in the French press claim Kyogo was “not selected” for those games, casting doubt on his future in Brittany. Despite being under contract until 2027 and pocketing a weekly wage believed to be around £22,500, the 30-year-old may already be heading for the exit door, with speculation growing about a possible return to Glasgow’s east end.
Kyogo was a pivotal figure during his time at Celtic, scoring 63 goals in 116 league games and playing a central role in the Hoops’ domestic dominance under Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers. His sharp movement, instinctive finishing and energy made him a fan favourite at Celtic , and his sudden availability has understandably caught the attention of a number of supporters.
A return to Celtic could strengthen the current attacking options, with Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah, and Johnny Kenny leading the line. Kyogo’s exit in January left a gap, but Maeda has stepped up in his absence. With the summer window approaching and marquee signings expected, a move back to Celtic could happen — if the deal makes sense financially.
Brendan Rodgers hasn’t said much about it yet, but with Celtic pushing for a 56th league title and aiming for Champions League qualification in August, a proven striker like Kyogo could be just what they need. It’s unclear if Rennes will let him go so soon, but most fans would be happy to see him back at Celtic Park.
