Jonathan David is appearing increasingly likely to leave Lille this summer amid reported Newcastle United interest.
Speculation has surrounded the Canadian all season as he enters the final months of his contract. The noise has done little to affect his performances, with David scoring 25 goals across all competitions this season.
NewcastleWorld reported in January that Toon chiefs were confident about signing David. That is despite Alexander Isak being the undisputed first-choice striker at St James’ Park.
Game time is an important factor in any decision but the Magpies will have added European demands next season. Add in Callum Wilson’s decline and Newcastle could be targeting a new No.9 ahead of the new campaign.

David is a thoroughbred striker and has proven himself among Europe’s best in recent seasons. Manchester United and Inter Milan have reportedly expressed interest in the 25-year-old.
There has been no progress from Lille’s side over a new deal and club officials are becoming increasingly resigned to losing their prized asset. Speaking last month, David dropped a hint about needing to compete at the highest level.
“I’m not sure if I’m staying or going but, if I do end up going, I have to push myself (to play) at the very highest level,” he said. “After that, obviously when you play at a big club, your position is never guaranteed and you need to fight. I’m never guaranteed anywhere I go to start or play every game.
“I have to perform and I’m willing to fight. I know it’s an important year, it’s a big decision, so I’ll make a wise decision.”
Jonathan David let slip about ‘free transfer’ admission
David has already confessed to planning on leaving Lille at the end of the season. The Canadian told Onze Mondial: “Yes, I’ll leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. And as far as my future, I hope to grow to become better, and play at the top clubs in the world, if I can.
“You’ll all know when the time is right. That’s at the end of the season. I’m not going to comment before then. First of all, though, I just want to enjoy myself and never forget that football is about fun.
“I want to end this season well. The finale promises to be exciting, and I want to play well and help the team out. Then when the season is over, my decision will be made.”
