Newcastle boss Eddie Howe talks up ‘great opportunity’ as Celtic make ‘very special’ announcement

Celtic have announced that they will take on Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly.

The Parkhead club were rumoured to be looking to arrange a date to take on the richest club in the Premier League and now, Celtic have officially announced the details.

Brendan Rodgers and Eddie Howe will compete for ‘The adidas Trophy’ as Celtic dub the pre-season fixture a ‘very special’ match between both clubs.

And here, both managers react to the news that Howe will visit Celtic Park for the first time since he was heavily linked with the Parkhead job back in 2021.

Brendan Rodgers looks forward to a ‘great occasion’ when Newcastle visit Celtic Park

Brendan Rodgers will be looking to prepare his side for the Champions League qualifier early next season and what better way to prepare than against Premier League oppostition.

With Newcastle on the verge of qualification for the tournament, Rodgers hails Howe’s side for their own ‘great season’ in the EPL.

In a statement released on Celtic’s official website, Rodgers said, “I’m really looking forward to this match in the summer and I think it will be a great occasion for both sets of players and supporters, as well as being really important in our build up to next year.”

“Eddie and his team, like ourselves, have enjoyed a great season and I know we will face a tough test from a top Premier League side.

“As Champions, we will aim to enjoy a good pre-season to get us ready for the challenges of next year at home and abroad, and this really exciting match will provide great preparation for us.”

Eddie Howe looking forward to Celtic vs Newcastle ‘test’

Howe was heavily linked to Celtic before Ange Postecoglou took over the club in 2021 and this will be the first time he has travelled to Glasgow since.

Now on the verge of Champions League qualification after winning The Magpies’ first trophy in 70 years, Howe can’t wait to visit the home of the Scottish champions.

Howe said, “Travelling to Glasgow to face Celtic is a great opportunity to test ourselves as we gear up for Premier League and European football next season.

“We’ll face a top team at an historic ground, with a big away crowd there to support us.”

The match will be played on the 19th of July and tickets for the match are on sale now with season ticket holders enjoying priority booking until the 2nd of June.
