POLICE have seized the controversial banner displayed at yesterday’s Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic.

A giant tifo, which included a picture of Gers legend Graeme Souness, was unfurled as the teams made their way out onto the park.

The display was shown in the Copland Stand and contained the image of Souness holding a shotgun.

This image is based on a real photograph of the ex-Rangers manager holding the weapon which was taken as part of a photo-op for the 1982 World Cup.

Along the bottom of the display, it read: “Take aim against the rebel scum.”

The barrel of the shotgun in the image also appeared to be directed towards the Celtic fans who were sitting in the opposite corner of the stadium.

Now, it can be revealed that cops have taken the banner away.

The Scottish Sun understands it’s being held by Police Scotland as potential evidence while they investigate.

Regarding the display, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the banner and enquiries are ongoing.”

In the aftermath of yesterday’s derby, which finished in a 1-1 draw, Rangers branded the display ‘unacceptable.’

The club also hit out at a fan who threw a bottle onto the pitch.

Light Blues sub Neraysho Kasanwirjo ran on to remove the glass Buckfast bottle that landed within Celtic keeper Viljami Sinisalo’s goal area.

Rangers said yesterday: “Rangers Football Club condemns the actions of the individual who threw a bottle during today’s match.

“This behaviour has no place at our stadium.

“Steps have already been taken to identify the person responsible, and the club will take the strongest possible action once their identity is confirmed.

“We also acknowledge that the tifo displayed prior to kick-off crossed a line and was unacceptable.

“Our approach to supporter displays has always been built on trust, with the responsibility placed on groups to exercise good judgement.

“We will reflect on how these displays are managed and engage with supporter groups to ensure the right balance of trust, responsibility and oversight is maintained moving forward.

“Rangers is proud of its passionate fanbase, and we all share a duty to protect the standards and reputation of our club.”

Cops are also probing after sickening footage emerged of a Celtic fan mocking the Ibrox disaster at Ibrox.

The supporter held up his phone with the number ’66’ on the screen, a reference to the number of people who tragically died in the incident in 1971.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”
