On a week-by-week basis, teams from up and down the English football pyramid, from the Premier League mainstays to those in League Two, are called a number of names – some good, some bad. But imagine if fans were reduced to using one word from their lexicon? It’s difficult – so let’s rely on AI.

The X (formerly Twitter account) called The92Bible asked ChatGPT to give a one-word description of all 92 clubs across all four leagues, and it’s, for sure, created a whole heap of controversy with some of its responses.

League Two

Salford City’s word is linked to their wealthy owners

Starting off in the fourth division of English football, we’ve got the classic ‘Who?’ for Accrington Stanley, a catchphrase from a milk advert in the 1980s. No, seriously, check it out. It’s had its desired effect, though, as evidenced by AI’s one-worder.

Recency bias, perhaps, creeps into Bradford City’s descriptions: ‘Flares’. The Bantams recently secured promotion to League One after finishing the season in third place. In celebration, as thousands flocked, flares were a prominent feature.

As founding members of the Football League – which was established in 1888 – Notts County are famed for being the oldest professional club in world football. Bettering that, they themselves were founded in 1862, hence their description of ‘Old’.

Salford City’s, albeit technically not one word, is self-explanatory. The likes of David Beckham and Gary Neville have been involved with the fourth-tier outfit for some time now and recently, the aforementioned pair completed a £15 million takeover of the club. Their one-word description is ‘Classof92’.

League One

Wrexham, for obvious reasons, are ‘Hollywood’

Football clubs, especially in England’s lower leagues, are always looking for new and improved ways to get a windfall of cash – and Crawley Town did after being acquired by Wagami United LLC, a US-based cryptocurrency investment group, in April 2022. That’s why they’ve received ‘Crypto’ as their one-worder.

If you’re ever in England and you want to see a game with bucketloads of goals – you can visit Peterborough United. A study recently proved that the club has averaged 3.1 goals per game in the 2024/25 campaign – and thus, ChatGPT’s description of ‘Goals’ fits.

At first glance, noticing that Wigan Athletic have been given ‘Pie’ is somewhat odd. But one quick Google search makes it abundantly clear: their mascot is a baked dish characterised by a pastry crust and some sort of filling. Don’t believe us? Take a look for yourself below.

Everyone has heard of Wrexham’s emergence – and whether you believe it’s a fairytale story or not, you can’t dispute their back-to-back-to-back promotions (crazy, we know!). Funded by co-owners and actors, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Welsh club is going from strength to strength. Their one-word description is ‘Hollywood’, for obvious reasons.

‘Swanselona’ was the word used for Swansea City

Akin to a ‘Yo-Yo’ – which is ChatGPT’s description of Scott Parker’s Burnley – the club from up north have acquired an uncanny knack of transferring from the Championship and the Premier League in years gone by. Next season, they’ll be competing in the latter.

Did you know that Swansea City were once compared to none other than Barcelona? The side from Wales – used to, at least – played some lovely, fearless football which earned them the nickname ‘Swanselona’ as a result. The moniker has stuck.

Championship outfit Watford and managerial sackings go hand in hand. Premier League

Man Utd linked with the word ‘Nostalgia’

Now onto the big boys – by virtue of their league status, at least – of English football. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, after exiting the Champions League, have now gone five seasons without a trophy and are running the risk of becoming the Premier League’s nearlymen – hence they’ve been highlighted with the word ‘Almost’.

Brentford’s moniker of ‘Data’ reflects how well-run they are behind the scenes in their recruitment process, while Everton’s one-word description – ‘Stress’ – makes ample sense given their dalliance with the prospect of relegation to England’s second tier, the Championship, over recent seasons.

Once a dominant force in English football, winning league titles for fun, the Red Devils have been given the word ‘Nostalgia’. Nothing like looking back at a stacked trophy cabinet, is there?

On the contrary, their arch-rivals, Liverpool, have been blessed with the word ‘History’ – but on a similar note to Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur’s one-word tag of ‘Nearly’ makes sense given they last won a major trophy in 2008, beating Chelsea in the League Cup. That, however, could all change soon.
