POLICE chiefs have warned Celtic fans about their behaviour ahead of this Saturday afternoon’s title party.

It has become customary for fans of the title winners to gather in Glasgow on trophy day and thousands of Hoops fans are expected to descend on the Trongate again in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s final game of the season against St Mirren.

The area has been hit by disorder three years in a row from jubilant Hoops fans.

And with Council Chiefs copping a bill of £25,000, cops had been hopeful for a more organised event or fanzone this year.

But with no agreement struck between the club, police and Glasgow City Council chiefs instead cops have warned potential revellers that it is “everyone’s responsibility to ensure their behaviour does not negatively impact businesses or those looking to enjoy our city”.

Ahead of the big day, cops have told fans NOT to gather in large groups and told them a “proportionate policing plan is in place”.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland said: “We are aware of concerns regarding events in Glasgow on Saturday, 17 May, with large crowds expected to gather.

“I’d like to reassure the public we are working closely with our partners at Glasgow City Council to minimise disruption to the wider community and a proportionate policing plan is in place, with a focus on public safety.

“We respect the right to public assembly, however it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure their behaviour does not negatively impact businesses or those looking to enjoy our city.

“Please do not gather in large groups and be respectful of those around you.

“If you are planning to visit Glasgow City Centre on Saturday, it will be much busier than normal.

“There is also likely to be increased usage of public transport, so make travel arrangements in advance.”

Worried locals have also called for an Orange Walk on the day to be switched — to avoid potential flashpoints with partying Celtic fans.

Fears were raised after it emerged 2,500 Loyalists will parade through Glasgow city centre at the same time as 60,000 Hoops punters are heading to their team’s title bash.

Saturday’s parade, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, had been arranged before it was confirmed that the Bhoys would be presented with the Premiership trophy at Parkhead that day.

But the route, organised by the County Grand Lodge of Glasgow, is to pass through the Trongate and Merchant City areas, where hordes of Celtic supporters are expected to gather after the game against St Mirren for booze-fuelled celebrations.
