Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi missed out on the Crystal Palace FA Cup celebrations after being rushed to hospital.

The Eagles secured their first piece of major silverware in 164 years at Wembley Stadium on Saturday after beating Manchester City 1-0.

Eberechi Eze‘s first half strike proved to be the winner against the Citizens to make it third time lucky for Palace having lost their two previous FA Cup finals.

Oliver Glasner’s side held on to their lead after Dean Henderson had saved a penalty from Omar Marmoush in the 36th minute.

Their heroic defensive performance was in part down to Wharton and Guehi’s superb displays.

Guehi was forced off after taking a blow to the eye, but was still able to lift the trophy.

However, he was taken to hospital in an ambulance amid fears he suffered a fractured eye socket and complained about loss of vision.

It has been reported that he avoided a fracture, but sustained heavy bruising.

He was discharged around midnight, but missed the team’s celebrations in Wembley Boxpark.

Wharton was also forced to miss those celebrations, and posted a photo of himself in a hospital gown late on Saturday.

His involvement only came after recovering from a recent ankle injury to start alongside Daichi Kamada in the centre of the park.

Wharton had missed last weekend’s win at Tottenham Hotspur due to the injury scare.

The England international ended the match with a 100 per cent tackle success rate as well as completing all of his dribbles.

Wharton also won five duels, completed two interceptions, made four clearances and pulled off two blocks during the final.

However, one of those blocks proved costly as he missed the post-match celebrations on the Wembley turf.

The 21-year-old was forced to undergo concussion checks with members of the Palace medical team after a blow to his head.

He had thrown his body in the way of a shot from City’s Kevin De Bruyne as the beaten finalists pushed for an equaliser.

The effort struck the back of Wharton’s head, leaving him stricken on the floor before receiving treatment.

Despite initially continuing, Wharton was replaced in the 87th minute by Will Hughes as he headed for more checks on a potential concussion.

Glasner hailed the grit and determination of his players, including Wharton, following the match.

The Palace boss told Match of the Day: “Special credit to the players, they have never lost belief in me and the coaching staff.

“To be honest I can’t really believe it. I think when you play this game ten times, you win it once, and this happened today.

“The goal was the first time we were in their half and then we just defended with every single part of the body.”

As well as their first major trophy, Palace’s FA Cup triumph has also secured a maiden European campaign for the club.

They will now appear in next season’s Europa League, entering the competition at the league phase.
