Rangers have been without a permanent boss since February when Philippe Clement was sacked.

Barry Ferguson was placed in interim charge until the end of the season.

Gers legend Ferguson never hid his desire in wanting to take on the job on a permanent basis.

After Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hibs, the 47-year old insisted he was up to the job and reiterated he wanted to become full-time gaffer.

However, his hopes were dashed barely 24 hours later when Rangers revealed Ferguson would NOT be taking charge permanently.

A club statement confirmed that Ferguson had taken charge of his final game, that clash at Easter Road the day before.

He will now return to his previous ambassadorial duties with the club.

Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart added: “The search for our new head coach is progressing well, and we look forward to concluding our process in the coming period.”

So just WHO will the next manager be?

Well, there’s a new odds-on favourite with the bookies.

That man is Steven Gerrard, the former Rangers manager.

Gerrard, 44, is out of work after leaving Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq earlier this year.

He was of course previously in charge at Ibrox between 2018 and 2021.

A surprise choice at the time when he was plucked from Liverpool‘s youth set-up, the Reds and England icon went on to lead Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021.

But barely six months later, he quit to take over at Aston Villa.

He endured a difficult time of it in charge and was sacked by the Premier League giants after a year.

Gerrard’s name has always been in and around the conversation with regards to the next manager.

However, doubts about his plans have seen his odds drift out to 11/4.

Former RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose is third-favourite at 4/1 and you have a fair distance to go to find the next names on the list, Russell Martin and Danny Rohl who are both 12/1
