RANGERS have issued a response after a statement made on the club’s official channel caused controversy.

The SFA are investigating after former defender John Brown branded a refereeing decision ‘corrupt’ while acting as a commentator on Rangers TV against Hibs at the weekend.

Nicolas Raskin appeared to have the ball over the line but no goal was given in what the legend Brown called ‘the worst decision’ he’s seen in all his years.

The club have now bitten back at talks of an investigation as they don’t believe it is warranted.

The statement reads: “In a season where Rangers have been on the receiving end of several major officiating errors, frustration is entirely understandable. The idea that spontaneous remarks could warrant disciplinary action is excessive, surprising and inconsistent.

“This development should not overshadow what was a clear mistake, evident to anyone who has seen the footage of the game. The focus should be on raising refereeing standards for the good of Scottish football.

“Should a charge follow, we will defend it, and question whether club channels across the league are being monitored and policed equally.”

The incident in question caused now-departed interim gaffer Barry Ferguson to question the effectiveness of VAR.

Hibernian defender Rocky Bushiri scrambled the ball away from their net though it looked too late, but referee Nick Walsh didn’t call it a goal.

Hibs then went up the other end and promptly scored.

Ferguson said after the game:

“I’ve got to be careful what I say. I don’t want to get myself into trouble.

“But that is baffling.

“I seen it when it happened, I seen it again at half-time and I seen it again at the end of the game. What’s the point?

“The fourth official was brand new but the referee? Not interested.

“I’ve seen it all season with bad decisions. Not just with Rangers but with other teams.

“But that today was just mind blowing.

“I don’t think you need goal line technology for that one. It’s clearly over the line.”

‘Bomber’ Brown stated the decision was corrupt, prompting colleague Tom Miller to say: “Well, I’m not sure we can actually say that.

“Those are not necessarily the views of Rangers Football Club.”

Brown continued: “Well, I am saying it.”

“That’s a disgrace and it’s the worst decision I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been in football.”

Miller diplomatically replied: “John Brown obviously has his own opinion there, but it’s certainly questionable.”
