Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Greg Taylor’s future at Celtic remains undecided ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup final, with the manager refusing to rule out the left-back staying at the club beyond this season.
Taylor is approaching the end of his current deal, and while speculation has been rife about a departure, Rodgers insists a final decision has yet to be made. The Celtic boss revealed he held “a long conversation” with Taylor earlier this week and stressed that both player and club remain open to finding an agreement.
“The door is not closed,” Rodgers said. “He and I are just focusing on the performance level of the team and I think once the season is over on Saturday, then he’ll have a lot more thinking time with more space to do that.”
Rodgers has previously spoken about the challenge of managing both Taylor and Kieran Tierney in the same squad, but believes the demands of the schedule could accommodate both players.
“I would definitely say it’s not, 100 per cent, his last game,” he added. “I’ve put on record a number of times my keenness to keep him here, believing it can work with him and Kieran being here with the number of games that we have and the different types of games we need to play.”
With Taylor having recently become a father and at a stage in his career where long-term security is paramount, Rodgers acknowledged the complexity of the situation.
“It’s not all on Greg, either,” the manager stressed. “There needs to be that solution between the two. He recognises this is a big contract for him and a big contract in terms of this will carry him for the next four or five years.”
The Celtic gaffer emphasised that the discussions go beyond money and involve personal considerations for the player. Despite the uncertainty, he was clear about his admiration for Taylor’s contribution since arriving from Kilmarnock.
“He’s loved his time here, he’s enjoyed playing and he’s a real part of what we’re doing here. So hopefully, it can find its way to him being here. But if not? Then we’ve lost a fantastic young player.”
Taylor has been a consistent presence at left-back for Celtic for the past four years. With one game left and silverware on the line, his focus will remain firmly on delivering at Hampden — but the question of his future will quickly return once the full-time whistle blows.
