Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has floated the idea of Evan Ferguson making a return to his boyhood club Celtic this summer, as the Irish striker endures a tough spell in English football.
Ferguson, who has struggled for game time and form this season, started just three Premier League games across loan spells at Brighton and West Ham, scoring only once in 21 top-flight appearances. That marks a sharp decline from his breakout 2022/23 campaign, when he bagged 16 goals in all competitions for the Seagulls.
Goodman believes a move to Parkhead could provide the reset Ferguson needs.
“I was shocked looking into Evan Ferguson’s season,” Goodman said to FruityKing. “He only started a combined three Premier League games for both Brighton and West Ham. To me, it looks like his confidence is on the floor.
“I thought in January, and this is no disrespect to the Scottish Premiership, that Evan Ferguson should aim higher. But given what’s happened, a move to Celtic wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.
“If he goes to Celtic, he would be guaranteed goals, which would only boost his confidence and help bring out the player that we saw break through at Brighton. Evan Ferguson just needs to play football. If a move to Celtic means he can do that, then I understand why he would do it.”
Celtic were linked with Ferguson in the January window as they sought additional firepower, and while a move didn’t materialise then, the situation could change this summer. The 20-year-old previously spent time on trial at Celtic before joining Brighton from Bohemians in 2021 and is a self-confessed supporter of the Hoops.
If Celtic are to sign him this summer, it probably would be on loan. Brighton will likely be open to allowing the player to join the Hoops and re-find his scoring form.
With Brendan Rodgers expected to reassess his attacking options in the summer, Ferguson could emerge as a realistic option – if the player and club feel the timing is right.
