Newcastle United’s Marc Guehi has not went away after chasing the Crystal Palace defender last summer
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has expressed a determination to keep hold of his best players this summer, admitting the Eagles ‘won’t sell all’ of those linked with an exit. Newcastle United are one of many clubs queueing up for top Selhurst Park talent after refusing to give up on their pursuit of Marc Guehi, who was the St James’ Park hierarchy’s top defensive target 12 months ago.
Palace, who won the FA Cup this month and will subsequently play European football next term, have shown a determination to keep captain Guehi at Selhurst Park, while the likes of Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, Daniel Munoz, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Dean Henderson and Ismaila Sarr have also been tipped for potential exits.
Speaking this week, Glasner reaffirmed his strong view when quizzed over Eze potentially leaving south London if an offer of around £80m arrived. He told Sky Sports: “I don’t want to comment on individual players.
“We could talk about Marc Guehi, we could talk about Dean Henderson, we could talk about Adam Wharton, we could talk about Jean-Philippe Mateta, Daniel Munoz, Ismaila Sarr who played an incredible, outstanding season for us. We won’t sell all of them.”
The respective futures of those aforementioned Palace players attracting interest from around the Premier League and Europe could well determine Newcastle’s chances of landing Guehi. With Glasner keen not to have his dressing room gutted after such a successful season, it is worth keeping an eye on the business of other clubs.
Wharton has been watched by Liverpool and Manchester City, Mateta has been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United, and Eze has been tentatively linked with a plethora of top European sides, including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and more.
Guehi, meanwhile, has also been pursued by Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool of late. The England international is out of contract in 2026 and, as of yet, has failed to put pen to paper on a new deal despite terms being offered to the player.
Guehi was asked about his future after Palace’s FA Cup win, responding: “The most important thing is always doing the best I can for this football club. I come in every day and I try to be the same. I try to work hard.
“This football club has given me a lot and I’m still under contract at this football club so my focus is always at this football club. The most important thing is just doing the best I can and seeing what the future holds.”
Newcastle are in the market for an additional central defensive recruit this summer after failing to strengthen at the back in recent windows. Eddie Howe’s hope was that the arrival of Lloyd Kelly last summer would be followed up by another option at the heart of his defence.
Kelly has since moved on and Sven Botman’s recurring knee issues have, at times, put pressure on an ageing Newcastle backline. Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn all received contract extensions this season.
