Wayne Rooney Ranks His Top 5 Premier League Players This Season – Including One Liverpool Star

Former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney has ranked Liverpool’s Mo Salah as the best player in the Premier League this campaign.

That won’t come a a surprise to many, considering the Egyptian international is on course for the Premier League Golden Boot with 27 goals, as well as producing 18 assists. However, speaking to Amazon (quotes via The Mirror), Rooney explained his reasoning as he counted down his top 5:

“In fifth place, I think I’ll probably go with Bruno Fernandes. Obviously Manchester United haven’t had a great season but he’s been the one consistent player who keeps producing so I’ll go with Bruno for number five.”

“In fourth place, I’d probably go with Morgan Gibbs-White. I think he’s had a fantastic season for Nottingham Forest, creating and scoring goals and being the main player there in my opinion. In third place, I’d go with Cole Palmer. I know of late he hasn’t scored the goals he did at the start of the season, but I still think he’s been really influential for Chelsea this season.”

“In second place, I’d go with Isak from Newcastle. I think his all-round play, his goals, obviously scoring the goal in the final as well. Isak would be my number two pick and my number one pick would be Mo Salah. I think over the last few years his performances has been excellent and this season again it looks like he’s going to spearhead Liverpool to the title.”
Salah is breaking records this campaign

The 32-year-old seems to be ageing like a fine wine. He has moved up to third in Liverpool’s all-time scorer list, having leapfrogged Billy Liddell and Gordon Hodgson. He is currently trailing Roger Hunt by 42 goals.

Salah has also produced the most goal involvements in a single Premier League campaign, having surpassed Thierry Henry‘s total of 44, which he managed in 2002/03. Before the end of the season, he could also take the Premier League record for most assists (which currently stands at 20).
Liverpool fans are delighted that he is staying

With negotiations over a contract extension going down to the wire, some supporters were worried that the Egyptian could leave Anfield this summer.

Links with a switch to Saudi Arabia have persisted but there was delight among the fanbase earlier this month when it was confirmed that Salah had put pen to paper on a new deal keeping him on Merseyside until 2027.
