Five years ago, Marcelo Bielsa won the Championship title with Leeds United. The following season, the Whites finished in 9th place of the Premier League table, and the stage was set for Leeds to become a superpower once again.

But a 17th place finish and then a 19th place finish followed. It wasn’t meant to be in the end and Bielsa now manages the Uruguay national side, watching on as Daniel Farke eclipsed his points tally in the 2019/20 season.

Leeds United won the Championship title with a club record of 100 points, still only winning the title on goal difference ahead of a rampant Burnley side. This summer, Leeds United have £100million to spend on new players but that money alone won’t save Leeds United from the drop next season.

Instead, Farke might need to take some words of wisdom from Bielsa if he’s to stand a chance of succeeding in the top flight.

What Marcelo Bielsa said in 2021 now applies to Daniel Farke at Leeds United

Bielsa’s style of play was distinctive. It was his own thing and it served him well in the Premier League for the 2020/21 season at the very least. For a number of reasons, Bielsa and Leeds United eventually came undone. But for that 2020/21 season the going was very good, and it was arguably all down to Bielsa.

He stuck by his methods and watched his style of football succeed in the top flight. Speaking back in 2021, Bielsa insisted that too much change to the style is a bad thing and that teams instead need to make simple improvements to the current mode. That is something that Farke could really take on board with his Leeds United side rampant in 2024/25, and now simply in need of a step up in quality.

Bielsa said: “I believe that in football, there is very little margin to invent or create new things. What we will try to do is to improve the things we have been doing up until now. Yes, we are now better known to our rivals. But they are also better known to us.”

Daniel Farke doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel at Leeds United

It’d be understandable if Farke has some reservations about the new season and if he was considering changing up a few things. After all, there were reports that Leeds United wanted to sack Farke after promotion, and so he may feel as though he only has a couple months to prove himself next season.

The best thing he can do is keep Leeds playing how they did this season. They dominated teams with their fast breaks, fast wingers, possession-based builds-ups and so on. All Farke needs to do now is sprinkle a bit of Premier League quality onto his side and there could be a Premier League team in there.

If Farke takes Bielsa’s advice this summer and going into next season then he could enjoy as successful a campaign as the 2020/21 season under Bielsa.
