With both Manchester City and Aston Villa gunning for a place in next season’s Champions League, commentator Gary Neville spotted something that happened against the grain before Marcus Rashford equalised for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa from the spot.
Opening the scoring in the affair’s early stages, Bernardo Silva wheeled off in jubilation after Emiliano Martinez’s slight mishap saw him palm the Portuguese’s effort into the back of his net. It was advantage Manchester City – but they didn’t hold their one-goal lead for long.

With Jacob Ramsey bearing down on goal, Ruben Dias tripped the Englishman inside the box; though, referee Craig Pawson was unbeknownst to the severity of the collision. VAR intervened, and the man in black duly pointed to the spot after a pitch-side check.
To the dismay of Dias, Pep Guardiola and the home contingent, the replay of the incident was shown at the stadium – and Neville, who played 600 times for Manchester United during his playing days, was taken aback by their decision to put the incident on the big screen.

“He leaves his right leg in, it’s clever,” Neville – one of the greatest right-backs in Premier League history – said of Ramsey’s quick-thinking before Dias made contact with his leg. “They showed a replay on the big screen… are they allowed to do that?”
Then, at half-time, Sky Sports’ Kelly Cates confirmed that a replay was shown because Pawson and those at Stockley Park had come to the agreement that it should have been overturned. She said: “It was shown in the stadium, which they do when a VAR decision is overturned.”
Rashford converted from 12 yards out to peg the four-in-a-row champions back after Silva found an opener within seven minutes and shortly after the VAR incident, when the visitors were given a lifeline, the Premier League took to X (formerly Twitter) to give reasoning.
“VAR checked the referee’s call of no penalty to Aston Villa for a challenge by Dias on Ramsey – and deemed there was a clear trip and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and awarded a penalty to Aston Villa.”
Despite the fact that those of an Etihad Stadium persuasion were unhappy with the decision, especially when it was displayed for all to see on the big screen, it was given and Rashford’s goal levelled proceedings. Guardiola and Dias were booked for their reactions.

As alluded to, the two sides are among those who are vying to secure top four credentials between now and the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Up next for Guardiola’s men are meetings with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton. For Villa, it’s Fulham and Bournemouth.
