Although the Gers have their minds set on which players they can offload, it may leave Martin in a sticky position ahead of the summer.
Cyriel Dessers continues to make the headlines on that front, with another issue arising.
Dessers exit could big impact for Rangers
Dessers is one man who divides the Rangers fanbase.
Although he finished the season as top goalscorer with 18 goals, supporters often find themselves frustrated by how wasteful the striker can be.
With that in mind, fans at Ibrox are calling out for an upgrade, and those wanting to see the back of the 30-year-old could soon be set to get their wish.
AEK Athens have been credited with interest in the striker for some time, and it has now been reported that a verbal agreement has been made between them and Dessers.
However, a deal is yet to be agreed, although Rangers have been urged to hold out for close to £5million, which would be a profit on the £4.5m they paid for him.
Although making a profit on a striker who can wind up many looks like a good bit of business, Scott McDermott has warned the Light Blues that this could have big implications.
Writing in the Daily Record (16 June), he argued: “Ten days he’s been in the job as Rangers boss. And Russell Martin already has a major problem on his hands. Because if Cyriel Dessers completes a move to AEK Athens this week, the new Ibrox gaffer will immediately lose a guaranteed 25 goals from his team.
“That’s not an ideal start for any manager.
“And along with everything else in his in-tray, replacing that strike rate will shoot to the top of Martin’s priority list.
“If Dessers goes, he’ll be a big loss for Rangers and their new head coach.”
Rangers must replace Dessers
McDermott is right, the issues of Dessers’ future are not easy to navigate for the Gers.
If the Light Blues can cash in on a striker at 30-years-old it does feel like a no-brainer to allow an exit from Ibrox.
However, Dessers leaving will certainly leave a big hole in the Rangers’ side, and the pressure will be on Martin to find a suitable replacement.
In an ideal world, having Dessers as a substitute with the ability to make a difference when called upon would be incredibly beneficial.
Nevertheless, Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers want sustainable growth at Ibrox and surely these are the types of deals that will put the Gers in a stronger position.
Rangers can waste no time in replacing his contributions, though.
