THE fixtures have just dropped for the new Scottish Premiership season – and there’s a televised clash of TWO new bosses on the league’s opening day.

Russell Martin takes his Rangers team to take on Jens Berthel Askou’s new look Motherwell side at 5.30pm on the opening day (Saturday August 2) as they bid to establish an early lead on the Hoops.

Brendan Rodgers is bidding for a third successive title

It’s the first domestic test of the new Gers gaffer as the Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises era gets under way, although both legs of their Champions League opener against Panathinaikos will have been played by then.

Then it’s over to TWO Champions on the Sunday – with Championship winners Falkirk hosting Dundee Utd and Celtic hosting their flag day against St Mirren, both live on TV.

But with the English Premier League yet to get under way, there’s a whopping FOUR televised matches on that opening weekend, with Derek McInnesHearts taking on his former team Aberdeen for the cameras on the Monday night.

Rangers’ first home match of the season comes the following weekend, with a 5.45pm kick off at Ibrox against Dundee, live on Premier Sports.

That’s followed by Celtic visiting Aberdeen for a 12.30pm start on the Sunday as Brendan Rodgersmen seek revenge for their Scottish Cup final defeat.

There’s just one more matchweek to go before these two Old Firm foes are pitched into their first showdown of the season – with Gers facing a tricky trip to Paisley and Celtic scheduled to take on Livingston.

It may make sense here for the Ibrox men in particular to take advantage of the new SPFL rule which allows them to apply to get their third match postponed to aid them in European playoff clashes, although it could risk Celtic establishing an early lead.

And this year of course it’s Rangers who get the privilege of hosting the first Glasgow grudge match of the season, with Russell Martin’s first taste of Scotland‘s biggest fixture coming on Sunday August 31 with a 12.30pm kick off.

Both teams are likely to be coming off gruelling second leg playoff clashes the midweek before, with Celtic in action on either the Tuesday or the Wednesday and Rangers hoping they will reach that stage of the Champions League too.

Dundee Utd will make the shortest walk in football to visit their city rivals for the first Dundee derby of the season a day before that (August 30) with the first Edinburgh derby not until October 4 at Tynecastle.

Celtic transfer special – Nygren in and Kyogo to return

The derby fun is spread over the festive period, with Hibs hosting Hearts at 12.30pm on the 27th of December.

As for the remaining Glasgow grudge matches, Celtic host the New Year‘s game on January 3, meaning there’s time for both teams to parachute in some early January signings for the big one.

Rangers host the final pre-split Old Firm clash, with the date for the match currently given as February 28 at Ibrox.

As last year, the introduction of the new European group phases means there’s no chance for a winter break.
