Chris Waddle has backed a surprise move for one Liverpool forward as Tottenham weigh up attacking options this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur could very much be in the market for another forward this summer, as Richarlison’s future at N17 remains uncertain.
The Brazilian, who has often struggled with injuries during his time at Tottenham, is currently attracting interest from his former club Everton, who are keen on reuniting with Richarlison, as well as clubs in the Middle East who are also keeping tabs on his situation.
As for Tottenham, they have already been linked with a few forward options this summer, including Arnaud Kalimuendo, who impressed for Rennes last season with 18 goals in Ligue 1.
Chris Waddle urges Tottenham to consider Darwin Nunez
Following the recent transfer links, many Tottenham supporters have urged the club to make a move for Kalimuendo, although no official offer has been submitted at this stage.
Chris Waddle, speaking to OLBG, has now suggested another name for Spurs to consider – Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, who appears to be out of favour on Merseyside.
The former Tottenham winger drew comparisons between Nunez and Timo Werner, who left the club following the end of his loan spell last season, stating that the Uruguayan could offer more bite in the final third and prove a better short-term solution.
He said: “Would Darwin Nunez be another Timo Werner? Timo Werner did not have the drive or desire to succeed at Spurs, he looked a little in awe at being at the club, maybe questioning his own place in the team at times, he really lacked confidence.
“There is a big question mark around Darwin Nunez because it just has not happened for him at Liverpool. He could go to a new club and start scoring, we have seen strikers do that over the years, so do not rule him out of thriving in the Premier League.
“I am not sure what his future will be, I think with Darwin Nunez 95% of fans would be asking why, it would be a big gamble but it could come off. He always gets chances, whether he plays for club or country, he always gets chances. His problem has been about converting them.
“I think a loan deal would suit, for him to prove himself and for Liverpool to have him off the wages, only time will tell. Maybe it is worth the risk.”
Darwin Nunez stats highlight both potential and risk for Spurs
Of course, a loan signing for a player with a bit of Premier League and Champions League experience is a good move on paper.
Nunez, in his time at Liverpool, has scored 40 goals and registered 26 assists in 143 appearances since sealing his move to Anfield.
However, the forward’s finishing has left a lot to be desired, as in his first season at Liverpool, he missed 20 big chances, and in the following campaign, where he featured regularly for the Reds, he missed 27, which was the second-most in the division.
With age still on his side at just 26, one could expect that he will improve, but whether or not that development takes place at Tottenham, should he join, is a big question mark.
