Newcastle United are set to make a fresh bid for a player Zlatan Ibrahimovic was proud to have played alongside.
It’s been a slow start to the summer transfer window for Newcastle United fans, who haven’t seen their club sign a first-team player since 2023.
Still, things look to be picking up. Newcastle have made a bid for Anthony Elanga and while their £45million offer was rejected, it at least signals the club’s intent.
Forest value Elanga at more than £60million, but a fresh update in regard to Newcastle’s plan to sign him has now emerged.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are ready to make a £50million offer for the forward.
That’s only slightly above the initial bid and still below Forest’s valuation, but it does suggest Newcastle are going big in their pursuit.
Clearly, they rate the player. Eddie Howe has tried to sign Elanga twice before, although it remains to be seen if the club get anywhere near the demands set by Forest.
Newcastle’s record signing is Alexander Isak, who arrived from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £63million. Sandro Tonali is the second most expensive player in Newcastle history at £55million, so Elanga could instantly become one of the club’s record signings.
What Zlatan Ibrahimovic said about Anthony Elanga
Ibrahimovic said he was “proud” that a “great talent” like Elanga played for Sweden, albeit their partnership only lasted around 11 minutes back in 2022.
Still, it was quite the endorsement.
“A great talent, we are proud and happy that he comes from Sweden,” he said. “That he can represent Sweden now makes it even bigger.
“He has all the future ahead of him, and if he continues just as he has done, it looks positive.”
Last season, the 23-year-old enjoyed a brilliant season in the Premier League. Elanga scored six goals and registered 11 assists in 38 games as Forest qualified for European football for the first time in 30 years.
Having proven himself at elite level and with so much of his career ahead of him, it’s clear to see why Newcastle are so keen.
