Sky pundit makes Tottenham U-turn with heavy criticism with Postecoglou message

Jamie Redknapp has criticised Tottenham Hotspur’s performance as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Ange Postecoglou’s side held a lead, albeit a slender one, going into the second-leg against the competition holders – thanks to Lucas Bergvall’s winner in the reverse fixture. The North London club defended well and frustrated the hosts for the opening quarter of the game but their resistance was broken when Cody Gakpo levelled proceedings on aggregate.

The second-half was dominated by Liverpool and a Mohamed Salah penalty kick wrestled the advantage in their favour before goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk made it a miserable evening the north west.

Liverpool will face Newcastle United in the final next month while Spurs’ hopes of ending their wait for a trophy depend on a run in either the FA Cup – when they travel to Aston Villa this weekend – or the Europa League.

“From Tottenham’s perspective, I cannot remember a team in my lifetime go down with less of a fight than they did tonight,” said Redknapp.

“Not having one shot on target in the semi-final second-leg, when you’re trying to change the course of your history – I feel sorry for those young players. I think Djed Spence played 14 different positions, I’ve never seen anything like it.

“When you’ve got young players you’re meant to help them. Archie Gray and Bergvall, they’re trying their best but the senior players, I’d be looking at them to lead you to make sure you set the right tempo, they didn’t do that.

“There’s been some right lows this season, Palace, Everton, but that today, that scoreline, just horrendous.”
