Brentford 1-1 Everton: Ex-PGMOL chief reacts to contentious Beto footage

Beto was involved in a contentious moment as Everton drew away at Brentford in the Premier League on Wednesday.
David Moyes’ side played out a 1-1 draw at Brentford as they extended their unbeaten run in the competition to seven matches.
Everton had their chances to go ahead at the Gtech Community Stadium, not least when Beto was played through on goal before half-time.
Beto was unable to convert past Mark Flekken after getting away from Ethan Pinnock, who slipped and was unable to recover.

That was a poor miss from Beto and one Everton would live to rue it as Yoane Wissa opened the scoring for the hosts not long after.
Everton equalised through Jake O’Brien in the 77th minute, but Moyes may be wondering what might have been had Beto put his side in front.
Some have suggested that Pinnock was perhaps fortunate to avoid any action.
The point was made that, had Beto gone to ground rather than racing through, Pinnock may have been issued a red card for trying to halt his opponent.

In the view of former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett, though, there could not have been any contact or else referee Peter Bankes would have penalised Pinnock after Beto had missed.
After watching the footage back, Hackett told Goodison News: “The referee judged that the contact on the forward was not a foul and the player continued and did not take advantage of his one on one with the goalkeeper.
“When applying an advantage, the referee can go back and penalise the original offence.
“The fact that he did not do this leaves me with the impression that he did not judge a foul and play advantage because he did not go back and award a free kick to the attacking team.”
Everton extend unbeaten run with Brentford draw
Everton have now gone seven Premier League matches without defeat thanks to this creditable point at Brentford, winning four of those games.
The 2-2 draw with Manchester United at the weekend was packed full of contentious moments, whereas this game just had the one real talking point.
Moyes’ side now have a couple of weeks to rest up before travelling to Wolves on their return to action on 8 March.
