Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock is already making an impact as a venue which can provide revenue for the club, with a marquee sporting event to be held there.

The Toffees are yet to officially move into their new home on Liverpool’s waterfront after its construction was finally completed earlier this year, and a test event for 10,000 Everton fans has already been held.

Everton’s 52,888 capacity stadium is expected to have a transformational effect on the Blues’ finances, more than doubling the individual matchday revenue they’ve ever been able to bring in at Goodison Park.

However, the stadium is set to be used for far more than just Toffees matches, with Everton’s director of stadium development stating in July 2024 that the venue will be a “365 destination” used all-year round.

Everton Stadium to host England Rugby League international

Everton are already branching out with the varied usage of their new stadium across the city, with Love Rugby League reporting on 3 March that a marquee Rugby League international is set to be played there.

England face Australia in a three-test series on home soil for the first time in 2003, and Rugby Football League officials have been working behind the scenes to secure venues and dates for the three matches.

Wembley has been pencilled in to host the first test, with Everton Stadium and Headingley in Leeds set to hold the second and third, with official dates for the October and November tests announced soon.

Everton already reaping rewards for new stadium move

They’ve not even played a competitive game there yet themselves, but it seems Everton are already becoming a club who’ll be getting plenty of outside attention thanks to their state-of-the-art new home.

Bramley-Moore Dock playing host to a landmark event such as England v Australia – a headline-maker in any sport but one which sees rugby league’s ‘Ashes’ return after 22 years – could be huge for the Blues.

The potential exposure provided for the club and its new stadium, just a few months after Everton begin playing there, could be widespread, alerting other sports to its possibilities as that “365 destination”.

Rugby league has nowhere near the footprint that football does, but with rugby union and the NFL also on the hunt for new stadiums to play at across the UK, Everton Stadium can showcase its capabilities.

England football internationals coming to Merseyside are even rarer, but with Everton Stadium also set to host matches at Euro 2028, rugby league’s Ashes could be the first of several outside events held there.
