Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni wasn’t best pleased with Emiliano Martinez after the goalkeeper started doing keepy-ups during their World Cup qualifying clash against Brazil.

Brazil suffered their heaviest defeat to Argentina since 1964 on Tuesday night as La Albiceleste secured their qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a resounding 4-1 victory in Buenos Aires.

It was a night of humiliation for Dorival Junior’s side as goals from Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Giuliano Simeone handed the home team a three-goal advantage with 71 minutes played.

And a short time later, Emiliano Martinez rubbed salt into the wounds with some typically audacious antics.

To the delight of those in attendance at the Estadio Monumental, Martinez performed several keepy-ups as Argentina cruised to victory against the Selecao, who could only manage one shot on target throughout.

Here’s how fans on social media reacted to Martinez’s antics.

One said: “Dibu Martinez doing keepy ups mid game nahhhhhhh he’s the biggest troll in football,” while another commented: “This guy might be the rage bait final boss, genuinely the goat international keeper.”

A third wrote: “I don’t think I’ve seen a better big-game GK than Emi. His confidence and mentality are something else—perhaps on par with Oliver Kahn and Gigi Buffon in that regard.”

A fourth said: “No way Dibu Martínez started doing keepie uppies during the match with Argentina winning 4-1 over Brazil,” and a fifth added: “Oh boy they really toyed with them.”

Such was the nature of their defeat, Brazil captain Marquinhos apologised to fans after they suffered an “embarrassing” defeat to their bitter rivals.

“What we did here today can’t happen again,” he told Brazilian outlet TV Globo. “It’s hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment… It’s embarrassing.

“We started the game very badly, far below what we could do and they’re on a great run of confidence. They knew how to play smart. I’m sorry for our fans.”

“It’s not just the coach’s fault, It’s the players’ fault too,” he added. “There’s no secret formula in football where you make a choice and it works out. We can all do better. We have to share the blame.

“It’s about understanding the moment and being humble.”
