RANGERS boss Barry Ferguson has broken his silence over Vaclav Cerny’s ‘watergate’ antics.

After the late winner for the Ibrox side at Celtic Park earlier this month, the winger ran by the dugouts and was seen spraying water towards Hoops fans who fumed at the act.

Soon after, a police probe was launched into the incident.

Now, interim manager and former Gers captain Ferguson has had his say on the matter and has BACKED his Czech mate.

He said: “The reaction was, he’s excited because his teammate’s just scored what was to be the winning goal.

“I would have a problem if my players and my staff sat in their seat and never said a word or done anything. I want to see players and staff celebrating.

“Why do we play football? We play football to win games.

“And when we win games I want to see my players and my staff celebrating alongside our supporters.

“Sometimes you get a wee bit over excited, I’ve no issues with that.

“As I said, Vaclav was just over excited when his teammate Hamza scored a goal to get us a three points where we’ve not been able to do that for five years which is a long, long time.”

On the police investigation aspect of the scandal, he added: “I’ll let them deal with that.

“I’ve had a private chat with Vaclav, that’ll remain private. But one thing I’ve made clear to my players and my staff is that when we score, we celebrate.

“After the game, whether it’s Celtic, whether it’s Fenerbahce, whether it’s whoever, if that whistle goes and we’ve won three points, I’ve no issue going and celebrating with the fans.

“These guys pay a fortune to travel everywhere and come and support us. I want to see a bit of passion, not just from the stands, but from my players.”

The 27-year-old player spoke out on the incident himself earlier this month while on international duty, calling the situation ‘a bit absurd’.

Clips from alternative angles also appeared to show teammate Nedim Bajrami soaking their Old Firm rival’s fans after the full-time whistle.

Despite wanting to see ‘a bit of passion’ the temporary gaffer wants it to be well placed, as he commented on a controversial fan banner displayed recently.

The club put their own fans on blast as they were hit with Uefa sanctions over the display that read: “Keep woke foreign ideologies out. Defend Europe.”

Ferguson said: “I’m the manager of the football team and there’s high standards now.

“If anyone dips below these standards you’re not going to be part of the team. In terms of the banners, the club have made a statement.

“They’ve made it clear. My message is I just want the fans to make sure they go and behave themselves because we need them.

“Since I’ve come in here they’ve been a brilliant support, they’ve got right behind us and that’s key because you need your supporters driving you on.”
