Aston Villa are preparing for another important phase of their squad rebuild as Unai Emery looks to assemble a team capable of competing in both the Premier League and Champions League next season.
The Midlands club have already raised significant funds through player sales and are now evaluating where that money can be reinvested. Strengthening central midfield has become a priority following Youri Tielemans’ departure, with Emery searching for a player who offers Premier League experience, defensive stability and attacking quality.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are considering a summer move for Everton midfielder James Garner. Villa have admired the 25-year-old for several months and were strongly linked with him before the January transfer window. Their interest remains active, with the club now assessing whether a deal can be completed before the new campaign begins.
Garner is viewed as more than just a squad option. His versatility across midfield, ability from set-pieces and influence at both ends of the pitch make him an attractive target for Emery’s evolving side.
However, any move will be far from straightforward. Garner signed a new Everton contract in January, keeping him at the Hill Dickinson Stadium until 2030 and placing the Toffees in a strong negotiating position.
David Moyes considers the England international a vital part of his long-term plans after Garner started every Premier League match for Everton last season. He also enjoyed his most productive top-flight campaign, contributing nine goal involvements and further enhancing his reputation as one of the club’s most dependable performers.
Villa’s pursuit has been strengthened by Morgan Rogers’ British-record £117 million move to Chelsea, giving Emery considerable financial flexibility in the transfer market. Replacing Tielemans remains a key objective, and Garner’s proven Premier League pedigree fits the profile Villa are seeking.
Despite that, Everton are unlikely to accept anything other than a significant offer for a player tied to a long-term contract. Champions League football could strengthen Villa’s hand if Garner is interested, but convincing Everton to sell one of their most important midfielders will remain the biggest obstacle this summer as negotiations potentially gather pace.
