Former Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn continued his fine start to life in Saudi Arabia with a last-minute winner against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.
Bergwijn moved to the Middle East from Ajax in the summer and has helped Laurent Blanc’s men to the top of the Saudi Pro League table. Since his move, the Netherlands international has started every league game, scoring three goals.
And on Friday night, the ex-Spurs star added to his tally with a sweet right-footed effort against Al-Nassr. With the score level after Ronaldo had cancelled out Karim Benzema’s opener earlier in the second-half, Bergwijn netted the winner in the 91st minute.
The goal means Al Ittihad are currently five points clear at the top of the table and nine points above Ronaldo’s Al Nassr after 13 games
Managed by former AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli, Al Nassr are yet to win the Saudi Pro League title since Ronaldo’s arrival in 2023. Following Bergwijn’s late winner, Ronaldo was videoed leaving the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in disbelief.
The video shows the Portugal international shaking his head as he walked down he tunnel. He has since taken to social media to react to the defeat, writing: “We will come back stronger,” accompanied by a picture of Al Nassr’s team huddle.
Ronaldo’s leveller was his 15 goals of the season in Saudi Arabia. The former Manchester United forward has netted four goals in the previous three games, adding to his six goals in seven at the start of the season.
