Alexander Isak insists that Newcastle United will not get swept away with their fantastic festive form – insisting that the Magpies have just bounced back from a rocky patch before Christmas.
The £63million man knows that Newcastle players have just come off the back of intense “crisis meetings” at Benton following the ugly 4-2 defeat at Brentford earlier this month. And it wasn’t so long ago that the Magpies were slumped in 12th place after a disappointing run of form.
Of course, since then, Newcastle have turned their season around with an important Carabao Cup victory over Brentford at St James’ Park and have not pieced together a winning run of three Premier League victories in a row, the latest being the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Isak, who has seven goals in his last six matches and 12 for the season in all competitions, said: “We have to stay humble and work hard. We have won a few games, but before it wasn’t looking that great. We still have to do the right things and just keep taking one game at a time.”
When asked what the key to success will be moving into 2025, Isak had a simple answer. Isak said: “I think it is important that we play with the same intensity away from home as we do at St James’ Park. It helped us get off to a great start at Ipswich recently.
“And after that, we kept the same level throughout the game. We are winning the ball a lot high up the pitch and this generates a lot of chances for me. We are creating a lot of chances and those are the type of games you love as a striker.”
Isak hopes to add to his tally in the final fixture of 2024 away to Manchester United, with the striker sitting in fourth place in the top scorer table in the Premier League. Isak, who has 11 top-flight goals, was asked if he was focused on catching Mo Salah (16), Erling Haaland (13) and Cole Palmer (12), the Sweden international said: “Nah, not really. Obviously, you are aware of the table. but I just want to perform every game. As a striker you always want to score.
“It is too early to be looking at that (the top scorers table). What is most important is that I do well for the team. When I do well the chances will appear so I just need to keep the same level.”
